“Librarian as ‘Coach’: Using Peloton’s Motivational Pedagogy to Engage Students in Library Instruction” (Standard)

Monday, June 7, 3pm EDT

Melissa Langridge (Niagara University) and Natalie Haber (University of Tennessee at Chattanooga)

Are you a fan of virtual and on demand fitness classes? Do you wish you could inject your one shot information literacy (IL) sessions with the same energy offered by the trainers? Join academic librarians Melissa Langridge and Natalie Haber in this session as they explore the idea of the librarian teacher as a research coach. Devotees of the at-home fitness trend themselves, they wondered how they could employ motivational teaching strategies in the library classroom similar to those offered by fitness instructors. Do these strategies make students feel successful and increase feelings of self-efficacy?

In this session, the presenters will describe various motivational pedagogy approaches employed in their in-person and online library instruction classrooms. Drawing inspiration from the popular Peloton fitness app, as well as scholarship in the field of sport education and coaching, this session will give you a crash course in the terminology and research surrounding motivation. You will leave with concrete examples for how to incorporate these strategies into your lesson plans. A review of instructional technologies adopted will also be examined.
